Continuing
in the path of other innovative jazz artists like the John
Coltrane Quartet and Masada, we infuse rhythms and tonalities
of eastern music with jazz. Drawing upon Klezmer, Classical
Indian, and Balkan traditions.
Bayadere performs memorable original compositions and traditional
Klezmer tunes that are packed with catchy riffs and swingin’ drums.
The tunes range from up-tempo grooves to sultry ballads to
cinematic, epic musical journeys.
|
Each
member of the group has enjoyed success in their previous
musical ventures. In Bayadere, each member’s strengths
are maximized and combine to give the group balance, diversity
and it’s truly unique sound.
Our music has been heard in nightclubs, restaurants, cafés,
business parties, outdoor events, benefits and weddings. The
group also performs multi-media shows, Including theatrical
productions, mixed media and with belly dancers. |
Brian
Hawlk
(alto
sax, alto clarinet) - The vision:
Brian is the composer and arranger for the group. He studied
film scoring at Berklee College of Music. Creating moods
is always an essential aspect of his compositions. Brian
not only provides the structure of the music but also the
desire to leave that structure in search of new territory. |
Jeff
Kane
(upright bass) - The backbone:
Jeff also attended Brown, where he teamed up with Zack
in several jazz groups. Jeff is truly the complete bass
player. He can walk lines with the best of them. Has
a beautiful arco tone and he can lock into a groove.
Beyond that he makes Bayadere’s
most difficult, time and tempo changes seamless. |
Zack
Pitt-Smith
(soprano & tenor sax, flute, percussion)
- The
everything man:
While attending Brown University, Zack also found time
to study at Berklee. Highly skilled on several reeds,
flute and percussion, Zack can step forward and deliver
powerful solo’s or
step back and add just right sound to the mix. |
Rolf
Wilkinson
(drums, dumbek) - The swinger:
Rolf comes from the ole’ jazz tradition. He has several
levels of swing, which is absolutely necessary in a group such
as Bayadere. Rolf’s dumbek playing makes him a double
threat and again adds just what is needed for a middle-eastern
jazz group. |
