Brian Hawlk owns and operates Blue Velvet Studios in Hollywood. He has scored several award winning feature films, using everything from solo acoustic guitar to classic large ensembles while also adopting the use of sampled and processed sounds.

Originally from Peekskill, New York, the composer attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, graduating cum laude in 1998 with a degree in film scoring. While at Berklee he added alto saxophone and piano to his repertoire.

After graduating Berklee, Hawlk moved to San Francisco to be apart of the thriving independent film scene there. While in San Francisco the composer dug his heels into the artistic community scoring many short films as well as working commercial jobs like writing the main title for a show on PBS. As the role of the professional film composer was changing to one of producer and engineer as well, Hawlk starting working at Visionary Mastering where he honed his studio recording techniques to go along with his composition and instrumental skills.

Now based in Los Angeles, he has continued to flourish in the independent film community. Acquiring credits as a Composer, Sound Mixer and Sound Designer. Hawlk’s sensibilities and diverse scope have allowed the composer to work on projects ranging from retro Film Noir, to insightful documentaries, to super-natural dramas.
